The Illuminati
Are an ancient and monastic order whose sole creation is to seek out and rid humanity of the dark abominations that walk the night. Little is known of this secretive sect, even the church denies it's existence. Each monastery is home to a unique order, these orders are headed by a Master Superior who not only leads the prayers of meditation for the day but also decides the best ways to deal with newly discovered monster strongholds. These strongholds are a blight upon our world and must be exterminated. When the Illuminati go forth to destroy a dark ones compound, it is referred to as a mission of Final Absolution. Once all denizens of the dark keep are “absolved” the grounds are cleared and purified with ritual ceremonies and holy water, thus ensuring such evil never returns. Their motto “Semper Vigilo, Semper Venatio, Semper Fidelis” (Always Watching, Always Hunting, Always Faithful) describes their mission.
The Master Superior of each order is rarely seen in combat being busied with the daily reports and functions of the monastery. They also organize the “Grand Tournament” an event in which all of the Orders gather to test their tactics in mock combat. It is also a chance to share proven strategies to defeat the dark ones. Yet they maintain themselves as warrior masters of the highest order.
The Arch Bishop always wears the Miter of their office. In battle they wear it as a gas mask combo or with a “Facias Bellum”. Serving the Master Superior in whatever ways necessary. Hardened veterans of the Shadow Wars, they instill discipline and piety into their fellow brethren. Always quoting Scripture or the Chronicles during battle to help inspire the battle brethren under their command. They normally carry a “Priceps Arcanus” into battle as their melee weapon of choice. They also ensure that the Rituals of Preparation are followed prior to a mission they lead, including that all weapons are blessed with the Oil of Anointment.
Templars like the warrior monks of their namesake, still bring the light of righteousness down upon the abominations of heresy. Draped by a tabbard emblazoned with the heraldry of the ancient brotherhood, they fight the abominations with unmatched fervor. Always armed with the Gladius Sanctus presented to them during their initiation rites. It is a badge of their oath and a badge of their station within the ranks of the monastary. They are the elite strike force dedicated to the erradication of the dark foes. Their emblem's motto says it all “Millitares Viri Dei” (warriors of God). They are warrior knights, zealots no evil shall stand before them. They are often led into battle by a by a hero of their brotherhood known as a Knight's Marshal.
Paladins are solitary and eccentric they are
the elite monster hunters. Highly skilled and trained they thoroughly studied the ancient manuscripts including the Libro Tenebris Horrenda, containing the anatomy and lore of the walking nightmares. The Paladins are shunned by the rest of the order for their near obsession with the heretical knowledge of the dark ones. It is their belief that the better you know your enemy the better you can kill him. They believe in the divine power and the power of their weapons. They combine their prowess with martial arts, stealth and weaponry to provide support to the other squads.
The Crusaders form the core of the orders' military. Proving themselves in battle as Acolytes they step up to fill the ranks as monster hunters. Absolved of certain mundane tasks they may now dedicate themselves to daily prayer and meditation. Steeling their faith for the next encounter with the unholy horrors. They will provide the monastery’s security patrols and perimeter guards. They are also organized into fire teams to support and advance during a Final Absolution mission. Many will carry trophies from past victories hung from their equipment as warnings. The particularly lucky individuals have markings showing how many Final Absolutions they have survived. Often led by a Sergeant at Arms to inspire the Crusaders to even greater deeds of valor.
Acolytes are the order's initiates. Training in the ways of the warrior monk, they are well on their way to becoming the armored fist of the church. Being honed into the first steps of a surgical steel strike force against the dark horrors. They are taught humility, honor and piety through their daily routine. These duties which they perform in the monastery include the studying of catechism, martial arts, marksmanship, cleaning and polishing the orders' equipment and preparing meals. They are weak in skill but strong in heart. Still under scrutiny during their training they are assigned a Confessor, a mentor to ensure their transition into the Illuminati is a complete one. They accompany the Acolytes into battle as squad leaders. The Acolytes wear a mantle into battle on their backs to signify to the other order members that they are initiates and inexperienced. This will be worn the entire time they are initiates. Sometimes with a squad that is ready to step up into the ranks of the Crusaders they will be accompanied by a champion known as a Sergeant at Arms into battle. During this action the Sergeant at Arms will determine if they are ready to become Crusaders. After they return from this mission those that are left will be prepared by the Sergeant at Arms to take the rites of passage into a full fledged Crusader.
